Review: Part I was all about Google’s algorithm changes since 2009 and what SEO was like, in brief, before those changes happened. (“Stuff keywords, build backlinks, rank anything.”) Part II was all about what those three practices look like today (“ignore keywords, earn backlinks, rank only the highest-quality sites.”) Today, we’re going to talk about the new parts of organic SEO; the things that 2009 couldn’t even imagine.
Social Media in SEO
It’s not that Facebook wasn’t around in 2009. So was Twitter. But at the time, the SEO world only saw social media as good for public relations and the occasional backlink. The idea that maybe one day Google would use social mentions as a ranking signal was a pipe dream. Today, not only do we know that the first few weeks of a page’s SERPs are almost dictated by social media, we also understand that, in many ways, SEO and public relations are becoming one in the same thing. Which means that not only is finely honed social media skill a key part of dominating the content marketing game, it’s a fine part of organic SEO as a whole.
The Drive For Constant Content
‘Freshness’ is related to the social media switchover as well, because — to keep it simple — for those first few weeks when social media is at its most relevant and other factors haven’t really kicked in yet, Google gives every page a ‘bonus.’ That freshness bonus helps the page rank significantly higher than normal, but it fades every day unless social media mentions keep coming in. (Normally, if a piece of content is powerful enough to keep getting social media attention after about a week, it will also prove to be powerful enough to earn backlinks on its own as well.) But because no one can really know ahead of time what will earn that kind of attention, the drive from SEO people is to produce new content regularly so that there’s always something you’ve put out there that is benefit from the freshness bonus and thus earning you some attention somewhere.
There’s a third element that here — the element of ‘search engine grammar’ — that is also new since 2009, at least to the understanding of the SEO world. But it’s complex enough that it deserves its own post. Check back in the next couple of weeks, and we’ll tell you all about it.
Organic SEO Ain’t What It Used To Be, Part II
In Part I, we talked a bit about how organic SEO has changed as Google has updated its algorithm, and we talked about how it looked back in early 2010 and before. Now, it’s time to look at what Panda, Penguin, Hummingbird, and the other updates have done to SEO — in other words, what it looks like today.
Your Site Matters
In 2009, any site could rank #1 if it had the right backlinks and on-page SEO — but no longer. Between Panda and Penguin, the importance of a website’s usability and interest to the reader is paramount; if your users don’t click and stick, Google notices, and your site gets penalized. If you have too many ads above the fold, you get penalized. If you have thin content — not necessarily defined by any given number of words or images, but defined by how much of your content the average user interacts with before they click away — you get penalized. In many ways, your site is the single most important part of modern organic SEO.
Keywords in Context
Keywords aren’t irrelevant to modern SEO, but they’re close. Yes, having a keyword in your metatags and copy and all that does still point Google to the fact that your site — if it is worth ranking in the first place — should rank higher for those search terms than others. But what’s just as if not more important is the semantic context around those keywords. If you want to convince Google that your site should rank for the term ‘Orange County lawyer,’ you had better have words related to places in and around Orange County, words related to attorneys in general and your specific areas of practice in particular, and other highly relevant context.
Backlinks Aren’t Dead…but Building Backlinks Is
Your backlinks are still important, but how their important has changed; it doesn’t matter how powerful the linking domain is unless it’s also relevant and up-to-date. Which means the entire practice of organic SEO has shifted gears from ‘building’ backlinks to ‘earning‘ backlinks. In other words, your SEO company’s ability to create and maintain relationships with top sites in your industry, and their ability to create content so amazing that other top sites link to it because they want to is the new gold standard. Going around and creating links from Reddit, Squidoo, and blog comments is a waste of everyone’s time and money.
But that’s just how the old practices have updated. We haven’t even started to talk about the elements of organic SEO that are new since 2009. Guess there’s going to be a Part III!
Organic SEO Ain’t What It Used To Be, Part I
Let’s go over the last few years in organic SEO.
- 2010: Google reveals that it’s using social media signals as part of its ranking algorithm. The entire SEO world’s head explodes.
- 2011: Panda happens. Thin content, high advertising-to-content ratio, and a number of other on-site factors suddenly cause rankings plunges. The entire SEO world’s head explodes.
- Also 2011: Google reveals that it now includes ‘freshness’ as a factor for new content only. The entire SEO world’s head explodes.
- Also 2011: Google introduces the SEO world to ‘metadata’ via Schema.Org, and begins to encourage highly-structured data elements within webpages. Oddly, the SEO world doesn’t really seem to care that much.
- 2012: Penguin happens. A large number of ‘spam signals’ from keyword stuffing to ‘bad neighborhood’ links cause rankings plunges. Heads explode everywhere.
- 2013: Hummingbird happens. Semantic search results become much more reliable. Surprisingly, although almost nothing actually changes in terms of SERP results for specific keywords, the entire SEO world’s head explodes anyway.
- 2014: Pigeon happens. Local search results are adjusted to be handled more like core-engine search results. A second time, almost nothing happens, but SEO people go berserk focusing their efforts on local search.
- Also 2014: Google drops Authorship from the list of metadata schema that it’s using for ranking purposes. After years of only very slowly adopting metadata at all, the SEO world finally latched on to exactly one kind of metadata — Authorship — as being worth pursuing, so of course when Google makes this announcement, SEO brain matter hits walls and ceilings all over the world.
Now, let’s talk a bit about what that all means for organic SEO. Before that social-media reveal in 2010, SEO was about two things: making sure your webpage was structured in a way that put your targeted keyword directly in the eyes of Google spiders as many times as possible, and building as many backlinks from as many powerful domains to your site as possible while making them look as organic as possible. It didn’t matter what your site was, because any site could hit #1 as long as you had keywords and organic (looking) backlinks on your side.
